01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Located in Kaide, Nagaokakyo, Sushiichi is a neighborhood sushi restaurant serving chef-crafted nigiri across the counter alongside tempura and carefully prepared small dishes in reasonably priced sets and meal trays. Lunch options include the Basket Lunch, which lets guests sample an array of side dishes in small portions, as well as the Nigiri Set and Premium Nigiri Set, built to showcase the chef’s sushi skills.
Served in a woven basket, the Basket Lunch features sashimi, tempura, a simmered dish, a small seasonal side, dashi-infused chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), and steamed white rice, offering an appealing visual variety. When sushi is the priority, the Nigiri Set and Premium Nigiri Set deliver quiet satisfaction with 8 pieces of nigiri alongside freshly fried tempura and red miso soup. The daytime menu accommodates various cravings, from a dedicated Seafood Set Meal highlighting raw fish to Western-style options centering on shrimp cream croquettes or deep-fried prawns.
Evening Courses, Local Sake, and a Calm Atmosphere
Dinner service revolves around reservation-tailored dining, including omakase courses that feature an appetizer, sashimi, fried items, a steamed dish, and 5 pieces of nigiri. The à la carte selection highlights items like salt-grilled yellowtail collar, plain-grilled eel, and seasonal sashimi, which pair naturally with local Kyoto sakes such as Shinsei and Tamanohikari, or Toyama’s Tateyama.
The dining room includes a counter with around 7 seats, complemented by sunken-hearth kotatsu seating on tatami in the back. Given the intimate scale that comfortably accommodates solo diners and small groups alike, reserving ahead is advisable for both lunch and dinner visits.
